Reddit Gold is fun, a little goofy, but doesn’t have much value. Let’s change that.

Give users the option to add on a charitable donation to their gift of Reddit Gold. The standard $3.99, plus any additional amount over $5 that goes directly to the charity. Even send the recipient a gift code to redeem on sites like Watsi so they can select which patient to fund! (One of the aspects that makes Watsi so sticky is the ability to read through all of the profiles and help a person you feel a connection with.)

Call it Reddit Soul and instead of the gold coin icon next to gilded posts/comments, put a gold heart.

This turns a frivolous virtual good into something that has a positive real-world impact.

I tested this today and it got an AMAZING response from Redditors, some even made their own donations! Unfortunately my comment was deleted either by a mod or an admin. But that’s not going to stop me from trying this again tomorrow :)

So this is the first super minor modification I've made since having this fantastic device for about 2 weeks. It's nothing special, I just doubled the neoprene heat shield over on itself since only the top half of the device gets hot.

Not only does it give double the insulation on the actual hot top half, but I also think it improves the overall aesthetics and usability of the device. Holding the bottom half of the plastic base feels much better without the neoprene sleeve sliding off.

I have another basic mod in mind for this particular vaporizer, but it involves a bit more work on my part before I share...

Apple Watch's new digital crown allows users to scroll and cycle through content without fingers obstructing the screen. It's a lot like the classic iPod click wheel.

In order to bring the same UI elements to the iPhone, Apple can use the capacitive sensors within the TouchID home button to capture gesture input. Simply trace your finger around the metal rim of the home button in order to scroll or cycle through the content on your iPhone's screen.

I typically come into the store around 9:30pm every 3-4 nights and this is what I see in the hot food section.

There's an awful lot of delicious looking food sitting in those warming trays, and very few customers buying it. Your employees have indicated that it all gets thrown into the compost pile at the end of the night because donating hot food comes with a lot of legal risk, which I understand. But I believe there is way more value in that food...

What if every night after 8pm, you charged a flat rate of $10 per plate with all proceeds benefiting the Whole Planet Foundation? The majority of that food was going to get tossed into the compost pile anyway, so why not put it to good use and turn it into a positive thing for your organization?

At stores that serve alcohol, like the Plymouth Meeting location, you could even host happy hours around it - you'd get alcohol sales, the organization gets the food plate money and awareness. It's a win-win!

At the very least, it might be worth experimenting with this concept to see how it impacts food sales and traffic numbers.

The above video is a really good primer on what IBD (the broader term for Crohn's and Colitis) actually is. I highly recommend watching it to understand the core of this disease - it's short and easy to digest. 

Now that you have an understanding of this disease, let's talk about flares. Flares for me consist of two main issues, internal pain and frequency/urgency to use the bathroom. There are two types of crippling pain that often leave me curled up in a fetal position, unable to move. One type feels like eating broken glass and rusty nails - it's more of a sharp shooting pain in my gut. The other is like getting thousands of little paper cuts inside your intestines and then having lemon juice poured on them - a slow burning that won’t go away.

I'm lucky since I don't experience pain quite as often as some other people with IBD (although my pain frequency seems to be increasing lately). What I do experience is LOTS of blood and mucus in my stool as well as an increased urgency and frequency to use the bathroom. Losing that much blood really takes it's toll on the body and tends to leave me exhausted a lot of the time.

In order to help you get a feel for what the frequency/urgency portion of a flare is like, I've put together a little experiment:

  • Take an 8 oz glass and fill it 3/4 of the way with cranberry juice.
  • Then take a 1/2 finished mocha frappuccino that's been sitting out for an hour and has mostly melted and fill the rest of the 8oz glass with that chocolatey slush. All the way to the rim.
  • Now, when you're done reading this sentence, you have exactly 10 seconds to get to a toilet, get your pants off, and dump that lovely 8oz red and brown concoction into the toilet - try not to spill any on your way!!

Didn’t quite make it? Dump the contents of the glass down the back of your pants. I hope you had a change of clothes with you or else you get to waddle your way back home, feeling every single eyeball staring at you and questioning how an adult managed to get themselves into such a shitty situation.

Even if you managed to make it this time, don’t get too comfortable… you’ll have to repeat this process 20 random times throughout your day in order to get a real understanding of what life is like with Crohn’s/Colitis.

Not fun.

I'd like to see "channels" where I can watch random streams, top content, content from specific regions, etc.


One example would be the Most Viewers Channel where it just displays whatever stream has the most viewers. If another stream overtakes it with more viewers, a dialogue box pops up on the bottom of the screen 5-10 seconds before switching giving users the option to stay on the current stream.

Another example would be to show me the most popular (determined by viewer count, follower count, and rate of hearts given?) within a specific geographic region. This can be within X miles of my current location, or I can specify a location such as NYC. With this channel, I think a feature that mimics channel surfing would be interesting. Stream +/- buttons like the channel button on your TV remote. This can be achieved with a screen swipe up/down.

Just some thoughts I had before bed.

While one2many was a great temporary name, a lot of people told me that they were reminded of drinking too much when they thought of one2many.

give3.org really identifies with our mission - give goods, give time, give back.  Plus we have a pretty new logo :)

Last Sunday was pitch day and since we had a 2 person team and my partner Jay was busy coding away, the pitch was up to me.  Unlike a lot of the other teams, we didn't have designers and MBAs cranking out professional quality decks.  I resorted to using the tools I had available to me... an iPad, my creativity and heart.

This was my first time public speaking, I had only 2 hours to create the slides, write the talk and rehearse.  It was tough but definitely worth it.  I couldn't have done it without the support of all of the mentors at PHLSW, especially @gloriabell!  Thank you all for your amazing support, such a fantastic community here in Philly.

I'm currently participating in Philadelphia Startup Weekend.  I successfully pitched my idea for a not for profit and we're currently hacking away on making it a reality.

We are one2many, we foster a culture that celebrates giving & helping and that inspires people to be generous & compassionate to one another.  People donate used goods to us - items like old iPhones, iPods, routers, trumpets, bunk beds, etc. - and we then give these items away to people for free, in exchange for their volunteer service participation at local organizations (Habitat for Humanity, local soup kitchens, after school reading programs and the Special Olympics).

I've been doing this by myself for the past year and have successfully created over 250 hours worth of service for local organizations with only a handful of donated items.  One participant messaged me a week after doing his service to let me know that he was so inspired by the project that he started making egg salad sandwiches for the homeless guys around his building.  Pretty awesome!

I plan on initially running this like a bootstrapped startup so we don't need tons of funding.  We do however need donated goods and we would like to give donors the additional benefit of a tax write off (which is why we want to become a 501c3).

Assistance we're looking for:
design - logo, web, print
developer - front end specifically
501c3 - any support or feedback you have! (fiscal sponsorship would rock!)
donations - used items in good, working condition (especially if you live in Philly!)

Scott Sanchez is encouraging me to express my UX mojo in public, so rather than sending him my ideas on google chat I'm going to blog about them.  Today it's about the "new" action that's in nearly every single iOS app.

It's different in every single iOS app.  In twitter, click the little pencil box icon at the top right.  In mail, it's at the bottom right.  In Facebook it's the 'status' button at the top middle.  There's no consistency to user experience, and that annoys me.

My solution is that Apple should create a "swipe up" gesture the same way "swipe down" in iOS5 is for notifications, swipe up will become the action in any participating app to create "new".  New tweet, new email, new facebook status message, new SMS, etc.

App developers of course can do this today without waiting for Apple, but maybe the boys in Cupertino will read this and do the right thing for iOS6. :)

Try the "swipe up" next time you want to do something "new" in one of your apps, you'll like it, and that's what UX is all about.

MacRumors had an interesting article earlier today about iOS 5's new "Raise to Speak" setting which launches the Siri personal assistant app when you hold the iPhone 4S up to your ear.  The default way to launch Siri is with an extended press of the home button.  Both feel like acceptable ways to interact with a first-gen voice interface.

Later in the day I put a call to my bank on speaker phone and noticed how I was holding my iPhone as I navigated their voice tree ("PUT ME THROUGH TO A GOD DAMN REP" isn't a valid option in case you were wondering).  I was holding the phone upside down, talking directly into the mic just like I'm doing in the picture.  Whenever I talk *AT* my phone, this is the most natural way for me to hold it.  To prevent accidental activation when the phone is in a pocket or bag, require a quick tap of the volume button when the phone is turned upside down.  Apple recently repurposed a volume button to act as shutter release in the camera app so using it for something other than volume control might not be out of the question.

I also thought about having the iPhone listen for a specific voice command when turned upside down, perhaps "Siri".

::flips phone:: "Siri, do you think Apple would have users say your name every time they want to interact with you?"

"Probably not." It has a very robotic, sci-fi feel to it, something you'd expect to see in a Droid Bionic commercial.

Apple is really good at training users slowly transitioning user behaviour so expect Siri to get a more natural feel over time.

"Probably not."

About 2 weeks ago, reddit had an IAmA with astronaut Chris Hadfield.  For those of you not familiar with reddit and their IAmA/AMA (I Am A/Ask Me Anything) sections, it's basically a forum that allows the community to ask questions to famous and interesting people.  Unfortunately, by the time I saw this particular IAmA, it appeared astronaut Chris Hadfield had already stopped answering questions.  Immediately after reading his thread, I watched the IMAX: Hubble movie (which is amazing... even better when you see it in IMAX) and I came up with a fantastic question to ask Commander Hadfield.  So I hopped on reddit and sent his son my question, hoping I'd get a reply.  Unfortunately, I haven't heard back yet so I'm hoping the members of reddit think the question is interesting enough to push for an answer, so here goes...

 

God forbid something goes wrong during a spacewalk and an astronaut untethers and starts floating away, does NASA have an emergency rescue plan? I can't imagine they don't have some guidelines in place for extreme scenarios like this.  If they do, can you share any of it with us?  Thanks!
